Abstract

Objectives: By examining the relations between childhood experiences and childrearing attitude of primipara, this study aims to provide foundational data for preparing for educational programs on the role of a parents which, in turn, are designed to help primipara carry out the role of a parent successfully.
Methods: This study was conducted in two obstetric and gynecologic clinics in Gyeonggi-do between August 1 and October 31, 2005. A study sample of 208 primipara who satisfied the selection criteria was selected. Data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 11.0.
Results: Upon calculating the level of childhood experiences and childrearing attitude using an item mean, the item mean for the father¡¯s experience, the mother¡¯s experience and childrearing attitude were 3.61, 3.73, and 4.34. Of the general characteristics of primipara, the level of the childhood experience showed a significant difference according to religion in the experiences of maternal and paternal acceptance vs. rejection. Both of tile parents¡¯ childhood experiences showed a positive correlation with the childrearing attitude.
Conclusions: An infant is influenced primarily by his or her parents, who will have immense influences on the child¡¯s growth and development. Therefore, the development of a nursing intervention programs in needed to foster the proper understanding of the childhood experience, accommodate the practical needs of primipara, and increase tile childrearing attitude positively for the promotion of a realistic, successful role for a mother.
